Flaw-Erasing Concealer Tips

Concealer is a must-have in women’s makeup bags. Concealer is not only thicker, better cover flaws than foundation and powder, it also has high concentration of pigment. Concealer is use to cover what you don’t want to be appear on your face.

Under-eye concealer tips

Formulations to use under the eyes:
  1. CREAMS. Cream have a good amount of “stick” to them so they don’t settle into lines and wrinkles.
  2. LIQUIDS. Liquid concealer tends to go to a long way and its frequently used to cover the eye area and large areas. Some lend a hydrating effect because of the consistency.

Inside tip.
It’s best to apply concealer in within layers until the ideal coverage is achieved, “Thin layers work better, because, if the concealer is too thick, it will separate or crease,” says Jessie Powers – National Educator for Makeup Forever.

Prevent midday caking.

One common obstacle with concealer, especially liquid and extra-creamy types, is midday flaking and caking, which Powers says is the results of either a texture that’s too dry for the sin or too much concealer in any one area.

Use concealer to accentuate your features

Contour and highlight

A rather technical application, using a variety of shades of concealers (along with foundations and powders) can sculpt the face and draw attention to specific features. “The rule of thumb for sculpting is to use dark shades to make something recede, like the hollows of your cheeks, and lighter shades if you want to accentuate a feature, like the brow or cheek bones,” says Wade.

Lighten up your face

Strategically placing concealer, like down the bridge of the nose, instantly brightens up the face and brings attention to the center of your face.

The right way to use concealer

The main purpose of concealer is to hide unwanted flaws – think acne, dark circles and age spots. But what you use, and how you apply it, determines if you’re actually helping your skin. “You want your concealer to help give the appearance of flawless skin. The right shade and application method will help to even out your skin tone while covering blemishes, dark circle and redness,” says Wade.
  1. Find the right shade. “The best way to avoid a white, cakey look is to match concealer to your skin tone. It begins to look white when the color used is either too light or the wrong tone,” says Powers.
  2. Moisturize your skin. Always start with moisturized skin. If the skin is too dry, midday caking and flaking can occur, and the concealer may not “stick” to your skin.
  3. Build slowly. Concealer is buildable, meaning you can add more to get heavier coverage. When building significant coverage for a scar or tattoo, you can alternate between layers of concealer and translucent powder to stabilize the concealer and prevent it from sliding or breaking.” Says Powers.
  4. Pat gently. Gently pat makeup into your skin using your fingertips. “The heat breaks it down so it works better,” says Laura Geller international makeup artist Johnny Ottavino. Don’t blend too hard, which can rub the conclealer.

Foundation or conclealer first?

How much coverage you need determines whether you should apply concealer under or over your other makeup.

Concealer before foundation

When heavier coverage is needed, concealer should be the first layer of makeup. “I like to use concealer first so I can assess how much foundation is needed, but there are definitely cases when I do the reverse,” says Wade. Putting concealer on first helps blend away any demarcation lines, but you may need to layer concealer and foundation to get the coverage you need.

Concealer after foundation

“When concealer is used after foundation, it’s usually to enhance the coverage of the foundation because the imperfection is minor,” says Powers. You should always apply a thin layers of foundation as opposed to a think one.
